I am a storm chaser...

I stand in front of my truck, feel the warm, moist wind at my back. I gaze at the ominous looking clouds off to my west. I see heavy rain off to my northwest and then look to the left of the rain shaft. I see a wall of white cascading to the ground. Hail shaft. I wonder if there are golfballs or something larger falling from it. My eyes are delighted to see a single, long cloud that looks to be feeding into the monstrosity, a Beaver’s Tail. Then, to the left of the hail shaft, I see a pronounced lowering of the cloud base-my excitement escalates as I snap picture after picture of this beast. This lowering looks to be rotating with condensation clouds rising upwards into it. Lightning strikes very near to me-I jerk back from my tripod and hunker down as the crash of the thunder surrounds me. The wind at my back grows stronger now, to about 35-40 miles per hour! I see dust and dirt being absorbed into this “inflow” as I watch the wall cloud spin away. Suddenly, a bowl-shaped cloud drops down from this twisting mass of black clouds. I take my eyes off of the funnel and take in the whole storm. The anvil is high in the sky. The whole storm looks alive as it churns across the western Oklahoma prairie. I see what weather geeks call the overshooting top, a mass of cauliflower looking clouds sprouting out of the top of the storm. I gotta get closer. I explore my road options and head west, drawn magically by some force that I cannot describe towards the heart of the beast.

As I get closer to the wall cloud, I hear a ping….ping…hail! As the pings grow into loud crashing thumps, I think briefly of my vehicle and hope that it will survive what is about to happen. Suddenly the hail stops and I get out and view the beast. The inflow is stronger; it is hard to keep my balance now. The wall cloud has now been trying to let down a funnel-it is about ½ way to the ground as I see swirls of freshly plowed dirt beneath the now thinning funnel. TORNADO! I shout as I snap photo after photo. I watch nature’s most violent and most beautiful spectacle dance across the farmland. The tornado grows to a large “elephant trunk” as it spins perilously close to this farmhouse. I pray for the people that may be in the house as the now large and violent tornado misses the house and plows into the hillside, shredding many trees. I have to reposition north and east to continue to view the behemoth.

I drive parallel to the track of the tornado, feeling as if I am racing it. The “tube” continues to grow larger and larger, now it is a “wedge”. A wedge is defined as a tornado that is wider than it is tall. You can just imagine it must have been a mile wide at this time! As I get ahead of it, I stop for more shots. I suddenly see swirling clouds directly above me-I realize that I am under the mesocyclone! The “meso” has grown to two or three miles across and is churning rapidly. I realize that I am in trouble! I peer around and see the obvious wedge and see another tornado! Satellite tornadoes! I see another, and another! I gotta get out of here! The wedge grows to larger than a mile across and I race east to get away! My heart is pounding; adrenaline is rushing as the engine in my truck screams, fishtailing in the dirt roads, jumping over railroad tracks. Suddenly I see a satellite tornado cross the road right in front of me! I slam on the brakes, sliding to a stop. Heart racing, I wonder why I do this. I drive east another ½ mile or so. Whew! That was close! As I watch the storm roll on, the satellite tornadoes disappear and the wedge begins to “rope out”. I gaze with wonder at the dying storm. The tornado then disappears after dancing on the field as it shrank into nonexistence. The beauty, the wonder, the excitement, the fierceness all in one bundle.

A week ago I heard that the Rogers County Youth Services emergency shelter may close. My heart immediately sank. As I fought back tears, I asked why? The reply was "money". Well, lack of, that is. Let me give you a bit of background...

I came to know RCYS about 5 years ago when I was manning a booth at our local fair. New Life Baptist Church had a booth and we gave out drinks, Bibles, a handshake, prayer, or whatever we could do. A young man walked up and I struck up a conversation. As we talked, I found out that he was a resident of a local youth shelter. He said that he was concerned about where he would go if he were to die, and I had the awesome privilege of leading him to the Lord. I asked if he would like me to visit, and that was the beginning of my work with the shelter. I asked to be able to come up weekly, and was welcomed. I met so many kids that really needed a helping hand, and needed a touch from the Lord. I have prayed with countless kids up there, and had the honor of delivering groceries, supplies, and even a freezer that was donated by a person in our church! It is such a delight to see the look in these kids' eyes when they get Christmas gifts from perfect strangers! Michelle and I even took a young man in for Christmas a few years ago that had no family to spend it with. Much to his delight, he even had presents under the tree Christmas morning! I could write all night about the stories of kids that have been residents at the shelter but I need to tell you how we can stop this tragedy from happening.

You see, the recession that we have been in the past few years has taken its toll on state funding. RCYS is one of the last few shelters left in this part of the state and they are in imminent danger of closing down permanently. Most others haven't survived the budget cuts. Well, my friends, I say that the buck stops here! What if all the shelters were to close? Where would the kids go then? To the streets to do whatever they can to get by. Some examples would be selling dope, prostitution, and human trafficking. They would go down paths that would lead to sure failure and utter destruction. Are we going to stand by and let this happen? I say NO!! We cannot. I know that there are many people that have money that they can donate to the cause. All donations are tax-deductible. I gave a donation yesterday. Will you consider giving to this very worthy cause??

Storm Chasing....and a small Spotter Network rant

Went out for a chase Friday evening and I was rewarded with one of the most intense lightning shows that I have ever seen. I drove up US 169 into Coffeyville Ks, then over to Independence to Moline where I shot the tower that you see below. I then proceeded west toward Udall and Belle Plain. Bailed south just before the storm hit Belle Plain and damaged some buildings and uprooted many trees! I shot the "moon shot" below just north of the Wellington Airport. Then decided to roll south to a developing "tail end Charlie" that Lanny Dean and Chad Berryhill were on just south of the Oklahoma/Kansas border, near the town of Braman.

Got to Braman, and met up with Chad & Lanny while they were shooting lightning. I ran up to Lanny's van, set up the tripod, clicked the shutter on my Rebel XSI, and BOOM! Lanny and I captured the nice bolt that illuminated the Tahoe (below). We sat there shooting for all of 5 minutes and I started to feel raindrops. We decide to go back towards Braman and get off the dirt road when the rain started coming sideways at the truck. I was about 1/8 mile behind Lanny as the rain and wind became ferocious. I soon lost them in the mess and thought to myself "am I in a stinkin' tornado?" The wind buffeted the Tahoe and I wondered if I should stop or keep rolling trying to get south of the wind. The wind wasn't terrible, I estimated it about 60-65 MPH, but I kept wondering if that was it or was stronger winds coming? After about 5 minutes of white knuckle driving on a dirt road that was quickly turning to slime, the rain and wind let up, but not before turning directions. Was it a tornado? I don't think so. But it was a scary moment. I caught up with Lanny near Braman and we discussed what we just drove through, we were all a bit nervous as we started to hear sirens growing louder. A fire truck, ambulance, and no less that 6 Kay County sheriffs whizzed by and entered I-35 heading south. We wondered, what happened?

Lanny busied himself reporting our observance on Spotter Network(55-65MPH wind just NW of Braman), which was quickly flagged-probably by some kid wannabe chaser that has NO experience in the field. We later found out that the sirens were responding to a pickup truck that was blown off the interstate about 1 mile south of our location. There was a minor injury to a child, transported to a local hospital. Verified report? I think so....BTW, Spotter Network has become useless--people that may have a personal grudge or inexperienced "kids" can jump in and flag valid report that was verified by witnesses and law enforcement. This report did not make it into the official LSR probably because of two factors, the inappropriate flagging of Lanny's report and the fact that the Norman boys were asleep and didn't warn on the storm. We actually saw and photographed a persistent rotating wall cloud on the tail end of the storm. Rant over...lol

We found another county road just outside of town and pulled off to shoot more lightning. Boy were we in for a show!! This is where the top pic came from. Spectacular light show provided by ma nature! Sorry about the watermark, if you would like to purchase a picture, contact me but I will not give those away thank you. All in all, a great chase. 10 hours in the truck, storms initiated in my target area, did not see any tornadoes, but was treated to the coolest light show that I have ever seen! I just realized that I haven't blogged in a while. (Sorry mom & Heidi). It seems like Facebook has taken over in the "what's going on" area. Instead of searching blogs, I just log on and walla, all my friends are there. So is there use for a blog anymore? Dunno, but I like to ramble on more than 420 characters at a time sometimes...
Just want to give you an update on my tour company that I am proud to be co-owners of, Extreme Chase Tours. We are already booking tours for 2011 and I am excited about the upcoming season. We had such a successful 2010 season and Lanny and I am stoked about 2011! Bittersweet day...

Well, I made it. I got through it..err...well the Lord got me through it. I preached at my Granny's memorial service today. I sense now more than ever that I was the one that was supposed to speak on this day. You see, my Granny is now in Heaven and I will see her again. As I said on Facebook it's not goodbye, but see ya soon, Granny. That's what I said also at the service. As long as we have Christ in our hearts, we can honestly say "See ya soon, Granny!"

I almost lost it more than once during the service but God took my shaky voice and made it strong again. Person after person came to me afterwards and told me how great of a job that I did but it wasn't me, it was He who dwells within me.

I am feeling called to preach now more than ever. My uncle and I had a good conversation afterwards and he said now all we gotta do is get you behind the pulpit more. I'm very insecure about my abilities to preach-I know that God will show me, teach me, and lead me--but I just, well, I don't know. Maybe I'm getting closer to answering His call but it would mean giving up a lot of things that I'm not sure I am ready to give up. Are things more important than God's call? No not never!! But don't judge me until you've walked in my shoes, k? Enough about me....

My Granny was a superwoman. She raised 4 kids in a small, 2 bedroom home that maybe measured 400 square feet. She never had a driver's license, car, cell phone, satellite TV, computer, or central air conditioning. What she did have was a big heart that cared for us all. She was concerned about our salvation, health, and our needs in that order. Notice I didn't say wants.

She also demanded us grand kids to "come here and hug my neck" when we arrived at her house. As a boy, I thought that was very uncool but now I long to get one of those hugs....

Granny taught me the kids' Bible song Jesus Loves Me. I still hear her voice...Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.....

I am so proud to have known Granny and I look forward to hugging her neck when my earthly journey is over...

What have I become?

If you are a storm chaser, or you have seen the stories on TV slamming chasers lately then you have a small glimpse into the chasing world. I have 2 statements about the recent drama and then I will comment below...

1. What the TIV did last Wednesday (passing in a no-passing zone going uphill) was irresponsible and could have ended up tragically. It was a risk that Sean took, and this time it paid off. Sean, what about next time when a single mom is cresting the hill and your TIV disintegrates her Honda and ends three lives?

2. Josh Wurman and his totally cocky remarks about how "his" Vortex2 research team didn't get precious data because us "peasant" storm chasers would not "bow" to him and let his armada pass by was uncalled for as well. Dr. Wurman, just who do you think you are? TWC interviewed Joshy and he was doing his typical crying because of his failure and the chase community is made out to be the bad guys. Phooey on you doc...

Ok, here goes. All of this garbage has resulted in mass chaos amongst the chaser community. I will admit, I am not as well known as others and in fact, some chasers may not know me at all. That's the way I like it--behind the scenes. So I'm sure that not many will mind my rant.

I simply will not and cannot participate in all the drama and garbage that has been ongoing for several weeks now in the chasing community. Not anyone in particular is at fault, save me. I have allowed myself to get suckered in to the bitterness and anger filled thoughts and attitude that is unbecoming of a Christian. It has caused me to lose focus in certain areas of my life and I simply will not let it get to me anymore. I am co-owner with Lanny Dean of the best tornado tour company in the world, Extreme Chase Tours. I will focus my energy on my relationship with God, my family, and my company. So to answer the big question "is Jeff quitting?" No, I am not quitting. I am simply gonna re-focus on what matters and let the other stuff fall off my back. I am giving serious thought about resigning from Stormtrack, a popular online forum for chasers that has snowballed into nothing more than a hate-filled forum where many new chasers have flocked to and try to act like they know everything. While the meteorological intelligence on ST is second to none, so are the childish games. Jury's still out on my leaving that forum. I know, I don't have to log in...

Also my Facebook page is going through some changes. I gotta get back to basics. When I opened my FB account, I had in mind my youth group On The Edge. I would quote Bible verses and encouraging posts for my friends but then something happened. I realized that I had more and more "friends" and the spiritual posts got fewer and farther between, and eventually my critical side started typing away and you probably have seen some pretty distasteful posts by me. Many of my friends have noticed this as well. For that, I ask your forgiveness. If I have offended you, I am truly sorry. And take heed, if you do not like Bible verses and positive, uplifting posts, then you can hide my status or "unfriend" me. All of us need a re-alignment now and then, and the Lord is dealing with me at this time.

TORNADO OUTBREAK EXPECTED MONDAY!!

Here are a couple of maps. The first is courtesy of the National Weather Service in Tulsa and is a graphic of what is expected for Monday afternoon & evening. The second is courtesy of the Storm Prediction Center and shows what is called a moderate risk of severe weather for Kansas & Oklahoma tomorrow. Bottom line is there will be severe weather, and please make praparations now for tornadoes, large hail, and severe winds. Listen to local radio and TV for updates and keep your NOAA weather radio on. This could be pretty nasty but if everyone will stay calm, we will get through it.....

MAJOR TORNADO OUTBREAK TODAY!!

Models continue to indicate another tornado outbreak for parts of Arkansas, Tennesee, and Mississippi today into tonight. Destructive long track tornadoes are a real threat in these areas. I ask all who read this to please maintain a heightened awareness today. Keep your weather radios and televisions on and be ready to take cover. Do not even try to chase this event--veteran chasers have described the Yazoo City tornado from last Saturday as a "black mass of clouds", and a "rolling black fog" not to mention that these tornadoes will likely be rain-wrapped so you may not know what is coming at you. Also radar data may fail as it did last Saturday so keep an eye on your radar data.

Prayers are going out for the folks affected by last nights tornadoes.

Picher, Oklahoma, 2 years after the tornado

Picher, revisited

On a stormy spring day in 2010, we drove by a small town plagued by tragedy. A town that once was a thriving community, a town that was dealt a final blow on May 10, 2008. A massive EF-4 tornado tore through what was left of the town that terrible day. 6 people lost their lives in Picher Oklahoma that day, and dozens were injured. Hundreds of lives were changed forever.

I head up a disaster relief ministry called Mission of Compassion and the day after the tornado devastated the area, we jumped into action. We gathered up food, water, and cleaning supplies and drove the next Saturday to the areas that were hardest hit by the storms. You can visit my blog here and read about the trip. Little did we know that Picher would never rebuild. Still, we left water, food, and hugs with the victims and relief workers that day.

My son, his best friend, and I were on a storm chase that led us through Picher just the other day. On the way home, we decided to stop by and take a look at the town. Was I ever surprised! It was like a ghost town! Keep in mind, FEMA and all government relief money went to relocate the victims instead of rebuilding due to the fact that the area had been declared hazardous and is a Superfund buyout site, but the scene was still surreal. I have never seen a ghost town in real life until now. There was even an auction in the middle of town selling off someone’s belongings.

As we drove through what used to be a nice neighborhood, my heart sank. I could hardly bear to see all the destruction-most looked as if the tornado had just gone through. Trees were still laying on homes, windows blown out, roofs missing off of homes, etc. Some homes had been razed and replaced by empty lots and overgrown vegetation. Trees were torn off at about the 15 foot level and mangled. The streets had deteriorated and had grass growing up in the cracks. Power poles were missing and electric service meters were gone from the homes that were still intact. Nary a car or person in sight, save for the activity of the auction.

It was here, in the middle of “ground zero” that I began to weep and to question my passion, storm chasing. I thought to myself why do I chase something that is so destructive? I hate to see people suffer, why do I chase tornadoes? The answer came quickly for me. What if all the TV stations and the National Weather Service had no spotters or chasers to provide ground truth? What if there were no warning sirens activated in Picher that day? Would it have been six lives lost? Or sixty? God only knows, but I am determined to do my part by calling in severe weather my TV station or calling the local emergency manager to inform him about the situation. It’s my passion. It’s who I am.

I am a storm chaser.

Do you wanna be my Facebook friend? Well then, let me enlighten you on a few of my "rules"...
1. DON'T SEND ME FARMVILLE INVITES!!! Yes, that was all caps.
2. please don't bore me with posts like "I'm going to bed" or "I'm awake now".
3. Make sure the words supercell, tornado, storm chaser, lightning, or any other weather words are not part of your Facebook "name", please!
4. Please honor my Christian convictions by not posting exceptionally rude, nasty, or dirty posts in your status updates. I respect your choices in your lifestyle, please respect mine.
5. Keep in mind that while I welcome questions from new chasers, spotters, and the like but please PLEASE do not act like a veteran chaser when you're not. That will get you on the dreaded chaser blacklist fast!!

These new rules are a direct result of a "friend" that decided to get cute and post something really nasty in his status, sparking a whole host of other nasty remarks. Now please keep in mind that I am very tolerant up to a point, but when that point is breached, then I'm done. Now I don't mind occasional four-letter words now and then, but this dude's post was totally off the charts. Trust me, I am not Mr. Perfect either, and I don't want to come off like that. But knowing that I am a youth pastor, I cannot let my youth friends see that I in any way condone that sort of garbage (speaking of the nasty stuff).

Wow, that sounds kind of uppity, huh? Despite the way that it sounds, I do consider it a privilege to have so many friends on FB and I wish to keep it that way, but I cannot and will not tolerate junk posts like this fella posted yesterday.

Wow. Just looked at my last post and it was about the historic ice storm that couldn't..lol. Let's see, what have I been doing...new heater core in my truck, can't find my Ram laptop stand, bought a 2001 Tahoe 4X4 to chase in this year, recovering from bronchitis, been busy with Extreme Chase Tours, being a dad, husband, youth pastor, working, and whatever else I have forgot. Oh yeah, and been seriously trying to avoid all the chaser drama that is happening. Like every other year, chasers get a bad case of SDS and think they own the world, and get on each others' cases. You can always find good entertainment with the chasing community!!

ICE STORM UPDATE!!

Graphic courtesy of NWS Tulsa. Models continue to show a slower, more northerly track. IF this verifies, that would put Tulsa under the gun for another historic ice storm!! Sperry-Piltx index of 4 to 5 through the Tulsa area. Please make preparations today...

Models are showing that temps at the surface will be below 32F while there will be a warm layer aloft that will in turn make rain instead of snow. That's the short version.

If you live in Oklahoma, be sure to stay tuned to media!!!

ICE STORM COMING!!!!

I POSTED THIS ON OUR EXTREME CHASE TOUR BLOG EARLIER. PLEASE READ & TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS NOW!!

Ok, here is one of the factors of this impending winter storm that has us here at ECT alarmed. The possibility of a crippling ice storm is a real threat across NE Oklahoma Thursday into Friday. This chart is the Sperry-Piltz ice index forecast from the NWS Tulsa and is a forecast of the possible ice storm impacts. This could rival the ice storm of 2007 but before you mets climb all over me, just listen. The ice forecast might not be the 2.0-2.5" of ice that we recieved in 2007 but .75-1.00" of ice combined with post-frontal winds of 15-25 M.P.H. will provide the same results. Catastrophic damage is possible.

Props to Lanny Dean and David Moran for calling this ice storm several days ago!!

Further to the northwest of the ice storm, very heavy and possibly record-breaking snow is possible. I just looked at the 06z NAM and it shows a 24" swath in central to north-central Oklahoma with 12" plus likely into the Tulsa area!! Not sure if 24" will verify, but the possibility is note worthy. Now combine the heavy snow with 15-25 M.P.H. winds and you will have white-out conditions.

Area emergency management agencies are already on alert and have industrial generators pre-placed along with truckloads of water to equip shelters that likely will be needed during and after this storm.

Please check on your neighbors and the elderly regularly.

Please listen to local media and keep track of our blog for further updates.

Lanny and I will likely be out during the storm streaming on ChaserTV so you don't have to get out in it.

Well, guess I can let the cat out of the bag now. I am proud to announce that I have partnered up with Lanny Dean, a well-known and repsected storm chaser. The result? Thoughts on Thanksgiving....

Well, it has came and went. Thanksgiving, that is. We had family over--two of my brothers and their families--about 15 people in all. We were supposed to have two guests from the local youth shelter, but one of the staff members took them instead. Yes, I over-stuffed myself on turkey, ham, and all the fixins. It was a great time of fellowship for our family But something keeps nagging at me, and it's a deep down nagging...

I can't help but think about the kids that don't have a family to share Thanksgiving with. Kids that have fallen in between the cracks of life and our little social world. Kids that need encouragement, love, compassion, kindness, security, hope, joy, kids that need to see a real God that really loves us and who works in our lives. They don't need to see the fake world that so many people live in, they need real love, real support, real dedication, and a real God.

I visit a local shelter for troubled youth every week. I share the love of the Lord with them, and offer them friendship. The kids here have seen it all. From drug addiction and criminal activities to victims of all forms of abuse, from abandoned kids to runaways, they often end up here.

Let me explain the type of shelter that this is. RCYS really cares for the kids. They have counselors on staff to help the kids, offering several programs aimed at getting and keeping these kids on track to become a positive part of our future. It's not a lock up facility, but it is a place where kids can feel welcome and loved. Yes, they have to abide by rules but it is not like a boot camp. I have seen several kids come to know Christ during their stay here.

I said all that to say this. I am trying to help raise awareness and publicity for Rogers County Youth Services. They have been facing budget cuts as well as many other agencies but you can help. They have a wish list and a needs list on the website. If you can help, please contact them--your help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, after the latest chaser drama, I actually can say that I understand why people become reclusive. I’m talking about well-known storm chasers that seem to drop off the radar. I can think of several that have done this in recent years.

While storm chasers are the best people in the world, they can also be the most eccentric, and can be out and out jerks. There are a lot of ingenious minds in the meteorological/chaser world, and my experience is that geniuses can at times be odd in character-I can’t tell you first hand though, I’m far from being a genius..lol. With all that said, all of our personalities and preferences can clash at times. This clash seems to rear its ugly head during the off season. I mean, one just has to browse the threads over at stormtrack.org to determine what season it is. Winter=multiple chaser drama episodes that can bring out the ugly in all of us. Yes, it has happened to me. I was drawn in to drama and bashed someone with whom I have never even been privileged to shake his hand. That was very Christian of me—not.

When a hobby turns a person into someone that can not have fun or someone that regrets what he/she says to our fellow man, then it’s no longer a hobby, it’s a burden. When that burden comes between two friends, it’s time to release the burden. How? Several ways come to mind.

First there’s the extreme view: Chaser retirement. This option does not seem viable because you will alienate other friends in the chase community and you will lose out of that camaraderie and friendship.

Second: become a recluse. This option parallels the first and should not be given much thought either.

Third: The Smith approach. This I believe is the best option for all and should be widely used by chasers in conflict. Step one-do not log on to Stormtrack during the off-season. I know this is extreme, but there are very few useful threads on there that will make or break a storm chaser at this time. There are several other threads and chaser blogs available for your enjoyment that will keep pressure to become involved in flame wars to a minimum. Read up on chase accounts from chaser websites, compare your forecast to theirs and see if you agreed or not. Finally, the most important step in chaser syndrome is to BAACK UUUPPP from the computer and get out & enjoy your families & friends, and enjoy life! It’s too short for adversities to ruin things for us!

We get a free 8x10 but of course we can order additional prints-they had us do several poses and had the "package" prices conveniently available. I really don't know what to write, or even if I should, but I'm gonna tell you a story about brothers...

Well, yesterday was a bad day. I rarely have them, but they do happen. You see, I lost one of my brothers yesterday. He was older than me by 20 years, and lived by himself on land that our dad had given us. Growing up, I always looked up to my brother, even in later years as we grew distant. I know that he had problems, and serious ones, but I tried to overlook them when I could, and tried to simply see my brother. He and I got "sideways" with one another in recent years, and I haven't spoken to him for a while, and that is what I want to convey to my readers....

The last words that we had were fierce, with him calling me every name in the book, and me threatening to call the sheriff on him. I now feel terrible for not going to him and reconciling because I will now never get that chance. I have to live with that pain now.

In Matthew 5 Jesus tells us that if we have a problem with our brother, to leave the altar and go to him fast and reconcile with him. He didn't say that it was okay no too if it wasn't your fault, He just said go and do it--and do it now. This passage had been on my mind lately and I had been thinking of going to Donnie to make up. We had argued over a stupid 350.00 worth of hay! 350.00 isn't even a car payment in these days, much less enough money to keep two brothers apart!! I believe this is why Jesus told us to do this; we may never have another chance. You never know what tomorrow will bring. Please, if you have family that you haven't talked to in a while, please give them a call......tell them you love them.....forget your differences and swallow your pride and just go to them. I will never have that chance to do that with my brother, and that hurts deep within me right now.

Just fired the boat up!!! She runs!!!! TJ and I worked all day Saturday and then just when we were ready to fire it off we ran into a stumbling block---no spark!! I finally figured it out a few minutes ago--I had the neutral switch installed incorrectly!! Just a quick adjustment and....VROOM!!! She runs!! I ran it on the water-ears for about 5 minutes and I'll probably take her to the lake tomorrow after work to test & tune on her!!

Well, you have been wondering what I had found wrong with my boat engine. After much investigation and scratching of heads, here is what I found. First, let me rewind just a tad….

My last post I wrote that I suspected detonation as the problem, eating away the #2 piston. That was a pretty good call except for the fact that the 5 metal “chunks” that I found in said cylinder were steel (as demonstrated by holding a magnet near them) pistons are aluminum and not attracted to a magnets. There was a possibility of the “chunks” being parts of the top compression ring in the piston, but disassembly of the block revealed the piston rings intact. These steel chunks were not more that ¼” long, and sort of round-ish. I thought the worst….I thought that I had dropped something down the intake when I built the engine despite being very meticulous about it.

After consulting with many of my mechanic customers and a wild dream, I went to the garage to inspect the carburetor- a Rochester Quadra-Jet. I picked it up, turned it over and was amazed at what I saw. One baseplate screw was missing!!! I realized then that I was at the machine shop’s mercy—they had nothing to do with the problem therefore they didn’t have to warranty their work. I was kinda sick. I mean, who would have ever checked to see if those screws are tight—outta sight, outta mind, right?

Well, after calling Jay at Custom Motors and revealing the truth (after a little objections from others) he said that he would treat me right and was glad to know the cause. Well the head took a lot of work and the block had to be re-bored and the one cylinder sleeved but it’s finally ready! I am going to pick it up at lunch today!! The total bill? $497.00!!! Well below what they could have charged me! If you need an engine, take it to Custom Motors!!!

Well, I pulled the motor and then pulled the head off of the junk 4.3....looks like a detonation problem that grenaded my brand new engine! Looks like I'm in the market for a big bomb, or a new engine. Don't think that the machine shop will cover this one.....oh the joys of owning a boat....

Well, I pulled the valve covers and didn't see anything wrong so I decided to pull the spark plugs...DUM-DE-DUM-DUM! Cylinder #2 is the culprit. The spark plug was smashed and that cylinder only has 30lbs. of compression---it had 200lbs. of compression just one week ago. Something came apart in that cylinder, valve, valve seat, top of piston, something. Regardless, the engine is coming out tonight, then I will pull the right bank head and find out exactly what happened....

I have about 6 hours on a boat that I bought in May----something is way wrong with this picture!!!

...guess you can tell I'm kinda bitter. Well, here's the story. The boat was finally fixed! All my problems were gone...until last night. We took her out after church last night for a quick dip in Oologah--had a blast!! We were returning to the dock when, as I powered down into the no wake zone, I hear "funny" noises coming from behind me. The boat starts missing, and metallic noises grow louder. Then it dies! As I grow more upset, I finally get it to restart, engine is now "hammering" loudly at me. We limped it to shore, and got it on the trailer. I bowed my head in defeat and drove home. Tonight I will run a compression check and pull the valve cover to confirm my suspicions of a dropped valve......later.....

I just wanted to give an update to the readers of the ol' blog (thanks mom!!). I just got back from Freedom Camp last week. The Lord did some great things in the kids' lives as well as mine. He set my priorities straight (they were off just a tad) and turned us upside down & let the baggage & junk fall off our shoulders that we carry around and treasure so much. I am so proud of the 9 kids that went with us and also very proud of the 8 kids that went with our host church, Sageeyah Baptist Church. It was a blast!! Okie dokie....my starter problems are gone. But, the real problem is that the engine is somehow ingesting water into the right bank. I thought that the gasket between the exhaust manifold & the riser was suspect, so I replaced it, took it out to the water to test, and no dice....still ingesting water after it sits about 30 minutes in the water. I'm thinking that I just ain't supposed to have a boat!!!

I am thinking that the exhaust manifold is cracked, allowing water to bleed into number 6 cylinder. When I get back from camp, I'll look into this....

In other news, this may be the last blog entry for a bit. I am heading up to Winderemere Missouri on Monday for youth camp. Yes, I am taking 8 of our youth to camp!! It will be our first trip this far away, so pray for us!! This is the same group of kids that have been with us on several Mission of Compassions...I'm very proud of them!!

Ok, new starter installed last night and guess what?? No fix! Just grunted so I decided to prove or disprove my hunch that I was afraid to realize and pull the spark plugs. Guess what? I have water in the cylinders!!!!!!! Since the engine is new, this could only be due to a couple of things. 1. a cracked exhaust manifold--it is a "wet" exhaust system. 2. A bad gasket in between the exhaust manifold and the "riser" that looked suspicious and should have been replaced upon reinstalling the engine.

Tonight after church I am replacing the riser gasket in hopes of finally resolving the problem of me being mad at the boat and very grouchy:-)

Ok, here is the problem I am having and the steps I have taken to correct said problem:
Occaisionally the starter "drags" and will not turn the boat over. After several tries, it usually fires off, but not always...
1. I have charged and tested both batteries=tested good
2. I replaced the starter with a brand new unit.
3. I replaced the dual battery switch.
4. I changed the grounding location from the bellhousing to the starter.
5. I cleaned and inspected the battery cables.
6. I have "jumped" the starter at the solenoid, it just clicks..
7. Pulled my hair out.
8. Stumped my toe kicking at it----j/k.

If I have missed anything, please chime in & let me know! I would like to have this thing running reliably soon!!

************BREAKING NEWS************* I found the problem!!
I pulled the starter & guess what? It's defective!! Brand new from O'Reilly's too! It will not turn when directly connected to a fully charged battery via jumper cables. The solenoid just clicks. I can bypass the solenoid and the starter motor turns, but does not kick out the starter drive. I will get the starter replaced tomorrow & also I will replace all cables with heavy duty 2 guage cables....

As you can see, I had a real blast yesterday...NOT!! The pic is of the very kind Corps of Engineers fellows TOWING me back to shore. I am beginning to hate boats!! well, at least mine. I am also starting to doubt my mechanical ability because I cannot find this electrical gremlin that seems to get in the way of us having a little fun. I sure felt like sinking that sucker last night but TJ and Dave talked some sense into me...more later when I'm not so mad...

This storm report chart clearly identifies the huge ridge of high pressure that is now in control of our weather here in Oklahoma until late August or September. High pressure ridge=no storms! Man, sure wish I could chase up north right now. Sadly for me, I am dismantling the chase equipment & storing it for the year....gearing up for some Saturdays at Lake Hudson with the boat!! Time for summer!

Great news! Mike had his surgery to reverse his heliostomy today! The waiting is over!! It is done! YAY! PRAISE THE LORD!! Check back for update on my shaving my playoff beard! Above: Nice rainbow in Ponca City 15 minutes after being blasted by 80 MPH winds. This storm tried to produce, but I am glad it didn't because we were right under it--trapped in between stop lights!!

This shot was north of Ponca City as the storm was merging with another storm and getting its act together.

We were treated to an amazing sunset just east of Ponca as another supercell tried to form and provided some nice eye candy...

Aahhhh yeah....this was the result of development along the outflow boundary. We followed it all the way to Pawhuska as it collapsed...

This was the first tower of the day as we originally targeted Sedan, Kansas. It was the day that should've...

It was funny watching Stenton on the Ski-Bob!! Boat is running well but I still have a couple of bugs to work out like the stiff steering and an electrical gremlin-but that's what makes it fun, right?

Well, it was a good night. She runs! Middle pic is my son and his famous man-cub pose, bottom pic is my brother trying to be silly,acting like he's pushing the boat..LOL. She just came off the water from a 45 minute test in Claremore Lake. She didn't take on any water, and ran beautifully. I have a couple of worries concerning the outdrive--it was a bit noisy and the boat tried to drift on plane but that may have been because we had too much weight in the front and not enough in the back, we'll see. I am proud of TJ and Stenton for all their help on the project! It's almost time for the water!!!!!!

Ok, the engine is out, with obvious damage from not being winterized properly. I have a long block being built as I tyoe this at Custom Motors in Tulsa. If you ever need an engine rebuilt, I highly recommend these fellas. Motor should be ready today and I might actually get to install it this weekend. Well, at least I had SOMETHING to do with boats on Memorial Day, huh?

Ok I was going to blog about my new purchase-a 1992 Mariah MX19. I was really happy with my purchase and finally getting something that the whole family can enjoy together. She sure is pretty, has a 4.3 Mercruiser, and lake ready.----EPIC FAIL!!!!!!

Well, the nightmare began Thursday night. I had it in my mind that I wanted a boat, found what i thought was a decent deal on Craigslist, and drove to Checotah to check it out. We looked at it, the dude started it, man it sounded good. We haggled down to a price that I could live with, so we hooked it up & took off. Here's where it all goes downhill.

We drove back out to the highway, mind you it is now dark, and turned off of "Bob's road" and a tire blew!! I thought, this is bad, bad, bad.....check the spare....guess what? FLAT!! I call Mr. redneck and he comes to the rescue! He drove to town to air the severely weather cracked spare up and we changed the tire and headed home--at 50M.P.H. due to my fear of the spare blowing out. Arrived home at 12:30AM.

Wait--there's more!

I was off at noon Friday so I planned a little yardwork and maybe take the new boat out for a spin at Claremore lake...just a quick spin around the lake...We arrived at the lake, launched the boat, and wallah! We were underway! I thought this is great!! After about 1/2 hour on the water, we sat in the middle of the lake & had a cold Coke to celebrate the new boat, went to start it up, and SCREEEEECH!! The starter was grinding terribly and wouldn't engage the flywheel. After several attempts to start the thing, we had to get towed in from the middle of the lake. Thanks to the Claremore Lake Patrol!

I forgot to mention that Mr. Redneck had recently replaced the starter, so I figured that it was just a bad rebuilt starter-no problemo, right?? Well I pulled the starter off yesterday afternoon and to my utter disappointment the engine block is broken where the starter bolts up!!!!! At this point I am livid, almost to the point of throwing an old fashioned cussing fit, but I held my tongue. I grab a flashlight and look at the broken place and notice that there is no rust on the block telling me that Mr. Redneck had broken it upon his replacing the starter. It is at this point I decide to call Mr. Redneck and guess what? Yep, he didn't know anything about it!! Me thinks me just took a big ol' bath in a load of crap!!!!!! Oh yeah, Mr' Redneck also says that he won't buy the boat back. Then I pull the oil dipstick and guess what......water in the oil!!!! AAAWWWWW SSWWWWEEEEEEETTTTTT!!!!!!! Can you tell I'm mad?

Moral of the story.....don't ever, ever, EVER buy a boat without a full test drive on the water!! Don't trust anybody, ANYBODY!!!!!

Oh yeah.....so much for being on the lake Memorial day weekend!!!

No, not mine, but he's my brand new nephew!! Yes, my brother & sister in law had a bouncing baby boy!! Named after our dad Nolan Smith, after his daddy David Michael Smith, and also our grandpa Michael Taylor. His name is Nolan Michael Smith. Nolan was born May 8, 2009 in Tulsa. Mom and little Nolan are doing very well and both are resting at home. I cannot tell you how proud of my little brother I am....you know big brothers are supposed to be the role models, but he is my role model. He worked so hard to get through college and get his teaching degree and now he gets to touch hundreds of kids' lives each day with his goodness of heart and his wisdom. I am also very proud of my sister in law Artie. Artie teaches special needs children at school--it's not a job but a calling! They are a couple that were designed by God for each other! Way to go, Dave & Artie!!!! I am so proud of you!!!!!

As I travel this old road called life, I learn more and more that we need to pay more attention to the important things. Important things like God, family, and friends. It breaks my heart to hear of friends or family having difficulties. I have one friend in particular that is going through a very hard time right now. Without getting too mushy, this friend is a really cool fella with a wide variety of awesome talents, as well as being just a cool dude. I won't discuss the who or why on the blog, but I will just ask those of you that pray to please do so for my friend. I was about 6 miles ENE of Vici, OKlahoma. After talking to several chasers, I am convinced that there was a rain-wrapped tornado in there. Too bad you can't really see it... Tornado? or not...YOU make the call:-)

Well, it’s over---almost!! You have probably been wondering about my best friend Mike Borrell. As you remember, Mike was diagnosed with colon cancer last year and has been through a ton of chemo and radiation, a major surgery, and a LOT of pain. Well, I am very proud to be able to say that Mike took his last chemo treatment today!! I knew that God was going to see him through this mess and He is! Soon he will be officially cancer-free and I can shave my playoff beard off that I have worn since the beginning of this mess!!! The beard has been a constant reminder that my best friend is walking through a very difficult time and that I need to pray for him like never before. Mike, it’s been the fight of your life, but, with the Lord’s help, you have WON!! WAY TO GO MIKE!! WE ALL ARE PROUD OF YOU!!!!

Mission of Compassion 7: Mena Arkansas

Saturday, April 18th we will embark on Mission of Compassion 7 to Mena, Arkansas.

The facts:
A 2/3 mile wide EF-3 tornado tore through downtown Mena Arkansas last Thursday, killing 3 and injuring dozens. The tornado damaged or destroyed approximately 1000 homes when it ripped through the town. Here is a news story from a Fort Smith TV station concerning the damage.

What we can do:
We will be collecting relief items this week to take to Mena. Items include cleaning supplies such as trash bags, work gloves, paper towels, etc. to non-perishable/canned food items to baby needs like diapers, formula and baby food. We will also collect school supplies because several schools were damaged by the storm. Thanks to Pastor Rod Baker, we will be able to procure some water/PowerAde and some snacks from Victory Christian Center.

Tornadoes in Arkansas....

Good afternoon,
As you all know, a tornado tore through Mena, Arkansas last night. The twister killed 3 and injured more. News reports says that 600 homes are uninhabitable (I am not sure how accurate that number is). I have spoken with friends in the area and they confirm that the situation is bad. Please be in prayer for the residents of Mena as well as other communities affected by the storms. And yes, we will be organizing Mission of Compassion number seven soon. Details to follow in the coming days as needs are identified….

Also be in prayer for the folks in Tennessee, Alabama, Kentucky, and Georgia. As of now, there are tornado warnings throughout those areas.

First off, I just checked out my good friend Kevin Bruce's blog. He's a great chaser and a good friend. He and I usually end up at the same place during a chase...lol. Be sure & check his blog out.

On another note, I have to tell you my stupidity story from last night (believe it or not, I DO stupid things). One day I will look back and laugh...but not now.

I was gearing up to shoot some pics/vid of the marginal severe storms heading for Verdigris last night. It was dark, I was excited, so I grabbed my gear & shot out the door. I had too much to carry and unlock the truck, so I gently placed my bag that contains my hand held HAM radios in it, along with other gear on top of the truck. Can you see where this is going??? After setting up my laptop & camera, I proceeded to pull out of the neighborhood. Stupid me. As I reached cruising speed on my road, I heard this thump, thump, CRASH!!! I immediately thought, "OH NO!! MY BRAND NEW REBEL XSI!!!" Then I looked to the backseat, saw my Rebel, and thought "what in the world was that?" Then I realized it was what I affectionately call my "ham bag". AAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHH!!!! Well, at this time, I know I lost a battery pack for my HT-202 and maybe the 202.....gotta check at the house & make sure it's there.... I rescued the rest of the equipment from the ditch, still in the bag, a little "shook up".....moral of the story.....triple check EVERYTHING!!!!!

MISSION OF COMPASSION

“I have been fascinated with storms and tornadoes since I was five years old” says storm chaser Jeff Smith when asked about his passion for severe weather. Jeff has been active in Skywarn for over 15 years, and is a media chaser for KJRH-channel 2 in Tulsa, Okla. With the combination of seeing the destruction and devastation that severe weather leaves behind and a compassionate heart, Jeff has always wanted to help disaster victims in practical ways. Jeff’s dream finally came true in 2005.

In 2005, Jeff partnered up with best friend Mike Borrell and formed Mission of Compassion. Mission of Compassion is a ministry that collects donations, packs up within days after a natural disaster and delivers relief supplies to affected areas. The day that hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans in 2005 they embarked on the first Mission of Compassion and brought relief supplies, cleaning goods, water, Bibles, and teddy bears to evacuees living in shelters in Alexandria, La. They since have been to Dumas, Ark. (F-3 tornado), Coffeyville Kansas (2007 floods), Northeastern Arkansas (2008 Super Tuesday Outbreak), and the Picher, Ok.-Seneca, Mo. area. (May 2008 EF-4 long track tornado).

Our most recent trip was to Lone Grove, Oklahoma, a small community near Ardmore. On February 10, 2009, a violent EF-4 tornado ripped through Lone Grove after dark. Sadly, nine people lost their lives. We delivered PowerAde, snacks, non perishable food, trash bags for cleanup, and much more in two trucks and a trailer! We were able to help out by delivering these supplies to the Lone Grove Assembly of God, and the Lone Grove Church of Christ.

Many have asked why not just let the Red Cross handle these situations? While the Red Cross is an amazing organization that has helped millions of storm victims, they get overwhelmed at times and cannot be everywhere at one time. That is why we concentrate on helping smaller churches and organizations that are helping in the community and acting as shelters and may not have benefitted from Red Cross assistance yet, and go directly to them. There has always been a place for us to help out, no matter where we have been.
Our vision for the future includes procuring a truck & trailer equipped with a Bobcat tractor so we can immediately dispatch a team to a disaster scene in order to help clear roads/driveways etc. We also are looking to form multiple teams in order to be more effective. Another race chase....

This view is of the Stillwater storm at approx 8:00pm. Driving west on the Cimarron Turnpike a couple of miles east of Hwy 18, looking southwest at a ragged wall cloud with rising scud and an occasional (possible) funnel. It was a race chase as I did not leave the house until 6:45PM. Things got a bit tense as I drove towards Hwy 18, watching this insane hail core heading towards me and trying like the dickens not to get in it!!!! We got to 18, blasted south and did get some marbles & occasional quarters, but missed the ping pong hail that later covered hwy 18! We watched with interest the wall cloud as we raced south but then the storm seemed to weaken a bit and turn back to a NE heading. It could've, should've, and would've....but it didn't put a tornado down. How's that for contractions?

Wow! It's been awhile. Well first, I want to let everyone know that Ashlea is home! she went home Tuesday and is undergoing physical therapy at a local hospital. Thank you for your prayers on her behalf!!

My best friend Mike is doing ok--he has three more chemo treatments to go!! I am ready to shave my playoff beard and he is too!! As soon as we win the "championship", I will get to shave this ugly old beard off!!! Maybe Michelle will videotape the shaving & I can post it...lol....naaa!!

Ashlea is doing well after a bad night and day on Sunday night & Monday. She has moved to a regular room and is not taking any visitors at this time. If you want to help, she needs prayer, and time to recover. Please pray for the whole family as this was a big scare for all of us. I am so thankful that the Lord has been so gracious to us in keeping her here with us and I'm glad that He comforts us all in these troubling times. God is good isn't He?

Please keep her in your prayers. Ashlea will undergo surgery to repair a cracked vertebra in her neck today. She has been heavily sedated and the doctors will try to wake her up tomorrow. Her blood pressure & heart rate are concerns right now. She had a bit of a fever yesterday also. Please pray for the Lord to be near her today and also for Him to guide the doctors and to hold up Alan & Melonie & the other kids during this crisis. Mission of Compassion 6, Lone Grove: Courage in the face of tragedy...
We left after church on Sunday and met up with Tom Stroud in Catoosa and then Lanny Dean & his sister Rhonda joined us in Bristow. It was a long drive down there but after we arrived, I was soberly reminded of why we do this. A town was destroyed; peoples’ lives were ripped apart. They needed our help.

When we drove into the town, the damage was obvious. We saw trees down, sheet metal everywhere. We stopped at the 1st Assembly of God to drop off supplies and saw that the church had sustained major damage. Ironically, their steeple was torn from the church and landed in the town bar across the street. One thing that touched my heart was that this church, while damaged, was providing needed help to the folks of Lone Grove. That is where the heart of the Lord is, in my opinion. They were very grateful to receive the supplies. We left them with plenty of PowerAde, Little Debbie snacks, thousands of trash bags, and some baby food.
Not long after we arrived I met the mayor. He described how everything had happened and even helped us unload supplies. That’s what I call a hands-on mayor! He described what happened as the tornado ripped through town. He called on about 40 volunteer firefighters & EMT’s and about 90-100 showed up to help search & rescue immediately after the tornado.
We then pulled in to the church of Christ. After we unloaded the rest of our supplies there the pastor offered his heartfelt appreciation and gave a prayer of thanksgiving for our efforts. Both churches were very hospitable to us and I am thankful that they are helping in this time of crisis in Lone Grove.

After this, we drove out to the south end of town and to the Bar K mobile home park that was destroyed. It was surreal. There were people walking through what used to be the streets of the park, still in shock almost two weeks after the storm. Metal, glass, insulation everywhere as you might expect. I had to get off by myself for a few minutes to take a few deep breaths and choke back some tears. As I looked down into the valley that used to be the trailer park, my heart just sank. I thought about the 9 people that lost their lives. I thought about the kids that have no toys, no bicycles now. I thought about the lost family heirlooms, the pictures, and all of the items in the peoples’ homes that were gone. I thought about 13 year old Kaylee Fambrough, who lost both parents while desperately trying to hold on to them during the horror. How does one describe this devastation? Hard to think about it, but if you can imagine a bulldozer rolling through your home, then that might be close. In the rubble I saw some interesting things, part of a wall that was splintered into what looked like a cross; a bowl with a spoon in it, another pile of rubble looked like a cross that had stuff wrapped around it, baby shoes, 8-track tapes with an 8-track player and lost of other odd items. It was hard to look at all the devastation.
While we were there, I spoke to our youth group and told them that while they had fun on the way down there, that to remember the reason we came. I looked around at these former homes and said that this is why we come. To put our arms around them and let them know that we care, and that God cares.

To the ones that went; Lanny, Rhonda, Tom, Karen, Jim, Tonya, TJ, Stenton, Chrissy, Karmyn, Mary Ann, Clay, Stephanie, Joey, Kimi, Seth, Tyler, thank you for your service. Thanks Jim, Tonya, Tom, Lanny, and Karen for driving 400 miles with us in 8 hours {:-) To the kids, thank you for taking the time to go and let these good folks know that we care. To those that donated food, drink, supplies, or money—thank you so much! The mission wouldn’t have been possible without your caring hearts. To those who simply kept us and the victims in your prayers, thank you. Your prayers were appreciated by all.

My niece was in a car accident today. She will need several surgeries and several weeks in the hospital. She had a collapsed lung & a broken vertebrae and a major cut to her head. She came through one surgery today and faces more. She may have eye damage but docs wont know until she wakes up—she is being kept very sedated as of now. Please pray for Ashlea Smith, my 16 year old niece.

Trip is still on….I am going to visit Ashlea early, then be at church for Sunday School & church, then leave for Lone Grove. Please pray for us…

Mission of Compassion 6: Lone Grove

Ok, details are starting to come together! Looks like the mission is a GO!

First let me start by stating the needs at this time. I have been in contact with several folks in the area and the common need is trash bags, work gloves, and workers. They have plenty of clothes, so no clothes are needed. I spoke with one of the coordinators at the Lone Grove Assembly of God and he told me that there will be a need for non-perishable foods (canned, etc.) and water. Diapers and baby formula could also be used. So, basically I would like to bring with us:
Large trash bags
Work gloves
Diapers
Formula
Large plastic totes with lids for storage
Cleaning materials for damaged homes (brooms, paper towels, etc.)
Water (I am working on securing some water or sports drink…details later)
Canned food items

I spoke with the pastor at the Church of Christ yesterday & he is making plans to distribute food & water to relief workers and residents on Sunday, and he mentioned that he could use some help. When we get there, we can help in this area after dropping off supplies.

I feel that we should also organize a toy drive for the kids that lost everything. Maybe we can collect new or almost new toys for a few weeks, and return to distribute them. I have an idea for distributing the toys, but I cannot share details yet but trust me, it will be unique and the kids will be blessed by this effort!!

As of now, plans are to leave Verdigris from New Life Baptist Church at noon Sunday, and return Sunday night. A Saturday trip would not be practical at this time.

Feb 10, 2009 an EF-4 devastating tornado tore through the community at 7:30pm. Sadly, 9 people lost their lives in this tragedy.

Ok, last Tuesday as I was driving into Cleveland, Ok. on a chase, I see this. Time is about 5:15pm. The storm is tornado warned, with a nice little TVS signature east of Blackburn, Ok. Good evening,

As you all know, a strong EF-4 tornado tore through the Lone Grove and northwestern Ardmore area Tuesday night. The current death toll is 9. The most tragic, in my opinion, is the 13 year old young lady that lost both of her parents in the tornado. The story stated that they were clinging to each other when the tornado hit, and they were torn from each other and thrown from their home. Both parents perished. You all know my heart for kids, and this just breaks my heart.

Several have asked about Mission of Compassion. I am now certain that we need to make an effort to help in some way. I am thinking of the usual items of water, non perishable food, industrial trash bags, baby formula, diapers, gloves, etc. are going to be needed but I have an additional idea…..

There are many children and youth affected by this tragedy. How can we plug in here? Could we possibly host a toy drive to replace lost toys, stuffed animals, bicycles, etc? These are certainly not needed immediately, but maybe as people get settled down a bit, we could help in this area…..

Please shoot me an email with any ideas that you may have, and above all, let’s surely keep these people in our prayers. I will be trying to contact churches & shelters in the area to get details on needed things and how we can help. I will update you with any additional information.

A very hard update to my earlier post...

...I had to edit my post from last night..I stated that there were no fatalities.....

As I went to bed last night, exhausted from a crazy race chase, I heard about fatalities in the community of Lone Grove. There were three at that time, and I said my prayers for the people in Lone Grove, and collapsed. I awoke this morning as my wife said that there were eight fatalities. Now I learn that there may be as many as 15. What a terrible night! I feel awful for the victims & their families. I need to get my thoughts together..a whole trailer park is gone!! I have already been asked if we are going on a Mission of Compassion.....

Sometimes I hate what I do....chase storms.....but I realize that my reporting of these monsters may save lives......or does it? Hopefully it does....I'm rambling, sorry.

My original target-Ardmore got two tornadoes tonight, albeit they were after dark. Still a volatile situation in Arkansas---pray for those folks!
